Now Lera’s midnight broadcasts draw coded replies from the lighthouse keeper’s mute daughter, who communicates through ripples in rainwater. But the town’s elders drown all clocks in the harbor each New Year, and Lera’s own hands tremble with phantom burns from a childhood fire she’s forbidden to discuss.

The deeper she tunes into the frequencies, the more the lighthouse beam dims, leaving fishing boats adrift in unnatural fog. Stranger still: the postmaster incinerates letters addressed to her, their ashes swirling into shapes resembling naval coordinates.
